Hi! I am Nyasha Poitier, I received my master's in clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2014, and I have been servicing clients for 12 years. You've made a very courageous step for yourself! I believe the client is the expert of their lives; in therapy, I am here to serve as a guide to help you explore your deepest thoughts and feelings while providing you with a safe and non-judgmental space.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session together, we'll start with brief introductions, an overview of the intake forms, and a dive into what's bringing you into therapy. This will help me create an individualized plan for us to work through in follow-up sessions.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

Having worked with young professionals for the past 12 years, I am confident in my professional ability to help clients effectively seek the change that they desire by (a) identifying the root cause of their challenges and (b) create an individualized plan that leads to measurable progress. I value open and honest feedback and building a therapeutic alliance.

Describe the client(s) you are best positioned to serve.

I enjoy working with adults who are seeking positive change, growth, and empowerment. My clients are wanting to heal, but do not yet have the tools or language to make their healing goals a reality. I am here to help guide my client in this collaborative process and empower them to be an active participant in writing their story.

My treatment methods

Person-centered (Rogerian)

I utilize person-centered therapy to meet clients where they are at. I enjoy this collaborative approach because it emphasizes the roles of both the therapist and client.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I utilize cognitive behavioral therapy to challenge unhelpful thoughts and narratives. I enjoy working with clients to form a healthier narrative about their story and experiences.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

I utilize mindfulness-based therapy to aide client in increasing awareness of their thoughts, feelings, and actions that hinders their progress. I enjoy utilizing mindfulness to help client embrace the here and now, the present moment. I find that this modality works well together with other modalities such as CBT.

EMDR

I view Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing as a structured therapy that encourages the patient to briefly focus on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation, which is associated with a reduction in emotion associated with the trauma memories. I am currently undergoing training for this modality, and I am excited to integrate it into my practice.

Strength-Based

I utilize strength-based therapy to identify and embrace client's strengths and abilities. I enjoy empowering clients to write their own narrative.
