Pamela McCloskey
For over thirty years I have had the privilege of providing therapy to individuals who have experienced challenges in life such as trauma, abuse and loss. In my work I use a variety of therapeutic techniques including Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TF-CBT). The decision regarding which modality is used is a joint decision made with the client and myself based on an open discussion about my client's needs and what they are comfortable with.
First session
During our first session, there will be a discussion about your goals, past history, how our therapeutic process will evolve. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions of me as well as questions about the different types of therapy that may be helpful.
Strengths
My strengths as a psychologist include not only my years of experience and training but also my own childhood experiences of abuse and neglect. Those experiences have confirmed my belief that recovery is possible with therapy and hard work and that you can live a life in which your past does not determine and control you and your future but rather that you can control the trajectory of your future and live a life of joy and success.
Ideal clients
Clients who are coping with anxiety; parents who are struggling with parenting issues, including adoption and foster care issues; individuals who have experienced some form of abuse and or neglect. Clients who are coping with life changes/challenges including issues such as divorce, employment changes, "empty nest" challenges Also, young clients who are struggling with anxiety, attachment issues and transitions from foster care to adoption
Treatment methods
Trauma-Focused CBT
This method allows you to develop skills to process your trauma and cope more effectively at a pace that you are comfortable with.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
This allows you to reflect on your thoughts and how they may affect your feelings and then what you choose to do. Thinking about our thinking can allow us to alter our behavior and have more positive interactions with others.
Psychoeducation
Information about mental health and related topics helps us understand behaviors and learn why events and behaviors may be occurring
Attachment-based
The development of healthy attachments to caregivers using the guiding principles of TBRI
Dialectical Behavior (DBT)
A therapy that balances acceptance and change through mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal skill development
