Thuydy Nguyen
Hello! I’m Dr. Thuydy (pronounced "Tweety"), a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Certified Sex Therapist, and Ph.D. in Clinical Sexology. I specialize in supporting individuals and couples navigating intimacy challenges, compulsive sexual behaviors, trauma, and relationship concerns. My doctoral research focused on trauma-informed treatment for compulsive sexual behaviors, which I bring into my clinical work with compassion, respect, and a nonjudgmental approach. I understand how difficult it can feel to navigate disconnection, conflict, or shame, especially when intimacy, sexuality, or past trauma are involved. My approach is trauma-informed, sex-positive, shame-resilient, and inclusive. I strive to create a safe, affirming space where clients from all backgrounds feel respected and supported, including those who identify as LGBTQIA+, engage in kink or BDSM, or practice consensual non-monogamy or polyamory. Together, we'll explore your unique experiences, identify patterns that no longer serve you, and develop practical tools for resilience, communication, and self-compassion. I integrate evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy, somatic interventions, and shame resilience principles to create a personalized path toward healing, connection, and lasting growth.
My Ph.D. in Sexology also allows me to provide advanced, research-based interventions for intimacy issues, sexual dysfunction, and compulsive sexual behaviors.
First session
Beginning therapy can feel both hopeful and overwhelming, and I want you to know that our first session together is designed to create safety, clarity, and comfort. The goal is not to solve everything at once, but rather to start building a foundation of trust and collaboration that will support your healing journey. During our time together, I will invite you to share what brought you to therapy, what you have been experiencing recently, and what you hope to gain from our work. You do not need to have everything figured out or know exactly what to say. Many clients arrive feeling unsure of where to begin, and that is completely okay. We will move at a pace that feels right for you. I will also ask questions to better understand your personal history, your relationships, and any experiences that may be shaping your current challenges. This helps me see the full picture of who you are and what you have been carrying. If certain topics feel too overwhelming at first, we will honor that and return to them when you are ready. My approach is always trauma-informed, meaning I will never push you to disclose more than you feel safe sharing. Together we will begin identifying your goals for therapy. For some clients, this means gaining tools to manage anxiety, depression, or stress. For others, it may involve working through intimacy concerns, healing from trauma, or addressing patterns of compulsive sexual behaviors. Some clients are seeking support for relationships, whether that involves couples counseling, navigating alternative dynamics, or learning to communicate more openly. Whatever your goals may be, we will define them together so that therapy feels purposeful and aligned with your needs. I will also share more about how I work. My approach integrates cognitive behavioral therapy, narrative therapy, somatic techniques, and shame resilience practices. I combine these evidence-based methods with a sex-positive and inclusive lens. This allows us to address not only symptoms, but also deeper experiences of shame, disconnection, and identity that may be affecting your well-being. Clients often find it helpful to know that therapy with me is not about judgment or labeling, but about creating space for growth, healing, and authenticity. By the end of our first session, you can expect to have a clearer understanding of how I can support you, as well as some immediate next steps to begin your journey. Some clients leave the first session with new insights, while
Strengths
My greatest strengths as a therapist are being analytical, straightforward, and results-oriented. I do not shy away from addressing patterns directly, and I believe clients deserve clarity rather than vague or surface-level conversations. With a Ph.D. in Sexology and years of clinical experience as a Marriage and Family Therapist, I bring advanced knowledge and an ability to quickly identify connections between past experiences, present struggles, and relationship dynamics. Clients often describe my style as honest, clear, and to the point. I provide direct feedback and practical strategies that help clients see their challenges from a new perspective and begin making meaningful changes. My analytical approach allows me to break down complex issues into manageable steps, while my straightforward communication ensures that clients know exactly where they stand in the process. At the same time, I pair honesty with compassion. While I may be blunt at times, I am never judgmental. My goal is to help clients gain insight, take action, and move toward healing in a way that is efficient, supportive, and empowering.
Ideal clients
My ideal clients are individuals and couples navigating compulsive sexual behaviors, intimacy challenges, or the impact of trauma. Many feel stuck in cycles of shame, disconnection, or conflict and are looking for a safe, supportive space to reclaim their lives. I provide sex-positive, trauma-informed, and nonjudgmental care for clients from diverse backgrounds, including those in LGBTQ+, kink, and consensual non-monogamous communities. Together, we work toward resilience, healing, and healthier relationships.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I use CBT to help clients identify unhelpful thought patterns and replace them with healthier ways of thinking and behaving. This approach is especially useful for managing anxiety, depression, compulsive behaviors, and relationship stress.
Trauma Informed Care
My trauma-informed approach acknowledges the impact of past trauma on current thoughts, behaviors, and relationships. I integrate safety, choice, and empowerment into every session, helping clients regulate emotions, reduce shame, and build resilience.
Narrative
I help clients explore the stories they carry about themselves, their identities, and their relationships. Through re-authoring these stories, clients are empowered to move beyond shame and align their lives with their values.
Sex Therapy
With doctoral-level expertise in sexology, I provide evidence-based strategies to address intimacy challenges, sexual dysfunction, and compulsive sexual behaviors. My approach is sex-positive, inclusive, and supportive of diverse sexualities and relationship structures.
Couples Counseling
I use systemic approaches to help couples and families improve communication, resolve conflict, and strengthen their connections. This lens allows us to address not just the individual, but the relational patterns that shape healing and growth.
