April Hutchinson
Therapy should be a safe, supportive space in which you can be your authentic self. As one human to another, I invite you to come as you are, knowing you will not be judged. My approach begins with learning about you, the challenges you're facing, and what brings you to therapy.
Together, we'll set goals that align with your core values and address whatever brings you to therapy.
Together, we'll set goals that align with your core values and what you'd like to accomplish. Whether it's healing past wounds, learning to manage emotions, working on relationships, or exploring your full potential, therapy is about you and I'll be here alongside you on your journey to a better life.
First session
Our first session includes me gathering information and you figuring out if I might be a good fit for you as a therapist. While you may feel nervous about starting therapy, you can rest assured you don't have to do anything other than be yourself.
Strengths
I strive to show up as my authentic self every session, every day, embracing my quirks, utilizing my strengths, and knowing I can be effective without being perfect. I welcome your questions and encourage feedback because your input gives me an opportunity to learn from you and you are the expert of your own life.
Ideal clients
We play many roles in life, some we choose and some we didn't plan or want. Every role and every stage of life has its challenges, so adaptability and a sense of humility are invaluable to our growth. If you are willing to learn and venture out of your comfort zone, amazing things can happen. Therapy is like many things, you get out of it what you put into it.
Treatment methods
EMDR
I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, a method that involves bilateral stimulation while processing traumatic experiences to address any negative beliefs that are impacting daily life (e.g., "I'm not enough," "I cannot succeed," or "I should've known better." If you are interested in this type of therapy, we can explore together if you're a good candidate for it.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
CBT is a form of psychotherapy used to address unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors and begins with understanding the interconnection of our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. This evidence-based method is effective in treating many types of issues, including anxiety, depression, codependency, relationship problems, and communication challenges.
Integrative
Integrative therapy is utilizing more than one type of therapy. I begin by taking a person-centered/humanistic approach to therapy, built on the belief that every human is unique and the expert in their own life. Emphasizing self-exploration and personal growth begins with providing a safe environment that is nonjudgmental. From there, we will explore different types of therapy that are most likely to be effective for you based upon your core values and the strengths you already possess. In addition to EMDR and CBT, I utilize ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention), Exposure Therapy, and Gestalt Therapy.
