I’m Melissa Lapides, and my work centers around attachment. If you’re dating or in a relationship, we’re going to look at how your early experiences shaped the way you connect, protect, pursue, withdraw, or repeat the same patterns over and over. Together, we make sense of why you’re experiencing the challenges you’re having — not from a place of blame, but from understanding. I work with both individuals and couples to help them build more harmonious relationships rooted in emotional safety, secure connection, and real love and intimacy. When you understand your attachment style and nervous system, your relationship patterns stop feeling confusing and start feeling workable. I’m warm, direct, and grounded — think compassionate but honest. I’ll hold space for your pain, and I’ll also gently call you forward when you’re ready. I believe most struggles make sense in the context of your story and your nervous system, not because something is “wrong” with you. My goal is to help you feel more regulated, more connected, and more empowered in your relationships and your life. Healing doesn’t have to be dramatic — it can be steady, real, and deeply transformative.

Hello, my name is Michael Chavez, LCSW, and I provide individual therapy to adults facing a variety of challenges, including anxiety, depression, work related stress, and relationship issues. I understand how tough life can be. Before I became a therapist, I went through my own challenges — unhoused, unemployed, and struggling with substance use. Getting sober and working my way through college wasn’t easy, but it shaped the way I show up for others now: with understanding, patience, and zero judgment.

The pressures of the modern world seem never ending, particularly when you deal with an untreated or difficult to treat mental health or substance use issue. I specialize in certain mental health diagnoses including personality disorders, postpartum issues, depression/anxiety, self harm/suicidal ideation. I am prepared to assist you in offering helpful coping strategies, understanding the psychology behind your experiences/symptoms, processing feelings and thoughts, and gaining better traction on your life. For over eight years, I’ve worked with people navigating anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, chronic illness, and more complex mental health challenges. My style is warm, direct, and practical. I want therapy to feel like a space where you can be honest, learn useful skills, and better understand yourself without feeling judged. I often focus on emotional regulation, distress tolerance, relationships, and building a stronger sense of self worth, while pulling from approaches like CBT, DBT, ACT, and solution-focused therapy. I also provide Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for clients who want to work more directly on trauma. We can explore whether CPT is the right approach for you based on your needs and goals. Hi everyone, I’m a Therapist with 11 years of experience, two Master’s degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Bachelor’s from UC Berkeley. I specialize in: 1) Anxiety and helping people overcome the constant thought spiral that overwhelms them or the negative things they tell themselves and just can't seem to escape. 2) Helping men who are struggling with sexual dysfunction, performance anxiety, or worry that’s taking over their daily life. 3) Guiding men and women who are navigating relationships and relationship difficulties of all kinds—familial, friendships, romantic (monogamous, polyamorous, open, or still figuring it out)—and the communication challenges that come with them. My approach is grounded in helping you understand your thought patterns, where they may be a disservice to you and how to change them in order to create behavioral change. We’ll set clear goals together and break them down into doable steps, and I’ll be here to encourage you rather than judge you if things feel hard along the way. I also make a point of highlighting the strengths you already have and reminding you of them on the days you forget. Supporting people in feeling less alone, more understood, and genuinely heard is the part of this work that brings me joy. Please note: I don’t provide couples counseling, but I do offer individual therapy focused on relationship concerns, intimacy, and identity. I am LGBTQ+ and kink‑affirming. This is a safe space.

My style is warm, down-to-earth, compassionate, and collaborative. I listen deeply without judgment while also offering honest reflection, insight, and practical tools to help you create meaningful change. Many people come to therapy believing something is wrong with them. I approach things differently. I believe our emotional struggles, coping strategies, and relationship patterns often make much more sense when we understand the experiences that shaped them. Rather than simply focusing on symptoms, I help clients become curious about what is happening beneath the surface, why certain patterns developed, how they may have helped you cope or protect yourself, and whether they are still serving you today. Therapy with me is a place where you can show up as you are. You don’t need to have everything figured out, know exactly what to say, or pretend that everything is okay. My style is warm, curious, engaged, and down-to-earth. I’m not the kind of therapist who sits silently and occasionally asks, “How does that make you feel?” I’ll be right there with you—asking questions, noticing patterns, offering perspective, and sometimes bringing humor into the room when it feels right. I work especially well with thoughtful, self-aware people who have done a lot of thinking about themselves but still find themselves caught in patterns they can’t quite think their way out of. You may be successful and capable on the outside while privately struggling with anxiety, self-doubt, perfectionism, relationship patterns, or a persistent sense that something is missing. I also work with people who feel disconnected—from their emotions, their relationships, or even themselves. Sometimes that disconnection developed for very good reasons. If you learned early in life to stay in control, rely on yourself, push feelings aside, or keep others at a distance, those strategies may have helped you survive difficult experiences but now leave you feeling stuck or alone. My approach is grounded largely in Internal Family Systems (IFS), attachment, mindfulness, and somatic work. Rather than asking, “What’s wrong with you?” we get curious about what happened, what you learned to do to survive or belong, and what different parts of you may still be trying to protect. Our work is about more than understanding yourself. It’s about experiencing yourself differently—with more compassion, more choice, deeper connection, and less internal noise.

Many people come to therapy struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, painful relationships or difficult life transitions. You may feel overwhelmed and exhausted from trying to hold everything together, or frustrated that despite your best efforts, the same feelings or patterns keep returning. You may find yourself searching for answers and wondering, “Why do I feel this way? Why does this still hurt so much?” The symptoms that bring you to therapy matter, and finding relief is important. But they can also be the beginning of a deeper understanding. Together, we'll look beneath what is happening now to understand the experiences, patterns, and ways of coping that may have developed for good reasons but are no longer serving you as well as they once did. I believe healing begins with understanding, deepens through awareness, and becomes more lasting when both the mind and body are invited into the process. After more than 30 years as a therapist, one truth has become increasingly clear to me: meaningful change rarely comes from simply telling ourselves to think differently or try harder. It grows from understanding how our experiences have shaped the way we think, feel, relate, and respond. With greater understanding comes greater choice: the ability to respond differently to yourself, to others, and to life's challenges. Whether you're seeking relief from what hurts right now, looking for answers, or trying to find a way forward when life has become painful or overwhelming, therapy can offer a place of solace, understanding, and hope. Together, we can work toward easing what is causing you pain while helping you feel more grounded, more connected to yourself, and more fully alive, with greater clarity and confidence about how you want to move forward.

I work with concerns including anxiety, depression, mood disorders, self-harm, eating disorders, and autism spectrum disorder. I’ve also worked in higher levels of care and with individuals transitioning from recent hospitalization, which has deepened my understanding of how important it is to feel supported during vulnerable times. My approach is person-centered and collaborative. I meet you where you are and tailor therapy to your unique needs and goals. I also incorporate Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills to help with emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and building healthier relationships. Whether you’re seeking support for something specific or just know that something doesn’t feel quite right, therapy can be a place to better understand yourself and begin making meaningful changes. I’d be honored to be part of that process with you.

Hi! I am an eclectic therapist. I tend to pull different methods from different theoretical modalities (e.g. Cognitive Behavioral, Client-Centered, Gestalt, Solution-Focused, and more) because I do not believe in a One Size Fits All for therapy. Different people work in different ways. I am flexible and like to learn more about each client before deciding on specific ways to work with them and follow their lead. I like to use humor and make clients smile. I believe it is important to focus on strengths and will provide suggestions/assign homework.

I believe that building a safe, nurturing, genuine, open, and honest therapeutic relationship with you is the best way to connect. First, I will help you figure out what you want and why. Together, we will work to explore areas of your life that are challenging to set you on a path of happiness, fulfillment, and purpose. You don't have to go through this alone. Are you tired of relapsing?? Tired of struggling to stay sober?? My experience in the field of Substance Abuse allowed me the privilege of helping those struggling with addiction and mental health disorders as well as their families. I have worked in this field for the past nineteen years and it has given me a compassionate perspective for those struggling to get and stay sober. I am enthusiastic and passionate about helping you find unique and creative solutions to problems. Parents, would you like some peace in your home? Are you tired of the lying and manipulation? Need support dealing with a teen with addiction issues? I can help.

We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across California from San Francisco to San Diego! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in California.

When booking you’ll be asked to verify with your Member ID. However, if you don’t have any of the insurances available you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need.

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs. Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
